AHA’S are mild organic acids found in many common fruits and foods such as:
• Glycolic acid from sugar cane
• Citric acid from citric fruits
• Malic Acid from apples and white grapes
• Tartaric Acid from the fermentation process used in making wine
• Lactic acid from sour milk
The action on the skin of these fruit acids is to break the bonds between the skin cells where excessive build up of dead skin cells has occurred. This causes the skin to slough away which improves the texture and condition of the skin. They also increase the skin’s natural moistureholding capability and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The use of AHA’s dates back thousands of years, Cleopatra used to bathe in sour milk (lactic acid) and other women of her day applied red wine (tartaric acid) to their faces making their skin smoother and fresher.
